Step 1 of 5
Step 1: Materials
Gather the materials needed for this project:
• Colored Pencils
• Newsprint (or any large sheet of paper)
• Paint or Markers
• Tape or Paper Weights
• Morning or Afternoon Sunlight
• Tree, Flower or Plant
Note
If you don't have a large sheet of paper, you can look for a tree or plant that casts its shadow onto a driveway or patio - then use sidewalk chalk to make your design.
Step 2 of 5
Step 2: Nature Hunt
• Spend a little time, at different hours of the day, checking out some options in nature, until you find one that you love.
Step 3 of 5
Step 3: Set Your Paper
• Once you've found a lovely tree, plant or flower for your "subject", place your paper on the ground, catching the shadow on it.
• If needed, tape or use paper weights to keep your paper in place.
• You also might grab something flat, like a cutting board or cookie sheet, if the surface under your shadow is uneven.
Note
By "subject", we mean the thing that you've chosen.
Step 4 of 5
Step 4: Trace
• Trace or lightly sketch the outline of your shadow on your paper.
Step 5 of 5
Step 5: Fill Them In
• Fill in the outlines with paint or marker and design your scene however you'd like!
